I have a fresh build of XPSP2 and when initiating MS Updates, it starts
"Checking for the latest updates..." and keeps checking, and checking, and...

I have disabled PFW, my TM OSCE AV, etc. and it just hangs there, checking
for eternity.

I have no exclaimed hw, it browses all MS.com fine, have tried purging all
temp and IE temp files, cookies, downloaded files, etc...

Something has changed with MSWU, there are too many similar posts.

If your motherboard has an nVidia nForce chipset, please update the nVidia
nForce IDE chipset drivers to the latest version direct from
http://www.nvidia.com/ and check whether that fixes it.

Also, try updating a genuine "fresh build" before installing third-party
products.

If you are behind a NAT router, ensure that any built-in firewall properties
of the router are disabled, especially any which might interfere with the
downloading of ActiveX controls.

If your internet connection is via DSL, then configure the Windows network
connection that connects to the DSL line so that its MTU setting is no more
than 1492. You can do this with the DrTCP utility from
http://www.broadbandreports.com/drtcp - make sure you select the appopriate
network connection before applying the MTU.

Update: I got frustrated and rebuilt the system, again, this time using
media with SP2 already on in vs SP1a like I did the first time. As soon as
it booted, I had to install the Dell NIC driver for functionality, and then
immediately went to Microsoft UPdates and started pulling updates..it worked!

I downloaded them all, and then lastly decided to install the 'Microsoft
Updates', the link on Windows Updates that appears as "NEW. Get Microsoft
Update Today"...and it immediately goes back to checking, and checking....

Being a creature of habit, I had installed the "Microsoft Updates" the first
time to, so that Office, Windows, all MS apps...could be updated using
Windows Updates as one stop shopping.

Had anyone else installed the "NEW. Get Microsoft Update Today" feature on
the Windows Update page?

Yes, I've been using it without problem since it was first available. It
does involve an ActiveX download.

Please, Robin, we know MS broke the update site.
I've been writing code since WE bought CPM from Seattle Computer and started
the fight with IBM, the "updated" windows update is broken, and is causing
havic for millions of users all over the world.

Now, I work for an extremely large aircraft manufacturer, managing over
30,000 aircracft design servers and workstations. We know what we're doing.
So, please ask the Update folks to simply fix it. No fuss, no muss, please,
just fix it.
