Microsoft updates not installing

I have three Microsoft updates available (all of which I want) which fail to
install. They are for Excel (KB978474), Outlook (KB979771) and PowerPoint
(KB976881). These updates are for Office 2003 running under Windows XP Pro.
Other updates have installed OK. How can I find out why these have failed
please?

Would you mind sharing the error code which is presented to your system
while trying to install these updates? Have a look into the Update History
on the Microsoft Update site and click on the "white cross the red circle"
symbol on the right of the updates failing to install.

Have you checked, that the "Office Source Engine" service isn't disabled?
Start -> Run -> services.msc [Enter]

The Office Source Engine was set to 'manual' so I set it to 'automatic' with
the sane result. It is now back to 'manual'

The error code for all three downloads is 0x80070643. I googled for this
and found Joseph Gagne at
http://www.error-fix-tool.com/errors.php?t=0X80070643 offering a 94% fix
success rate with a simple Registry fix. I'm wary at downloading and
running software from an unknown site so didn't proceed with that
possibility.

I have been to the web site ... 958052 and gone through each step. I now
have a log of events. The only step I haven't done is to contact Microsoft
which, at a cost of £46 is a bit too much. Any idea how to progress this
please?

At some point you used a Registry Cleaning Tool.
Do the following and then repost back with result. Worked for all that had the same
issue as you


1st Rename Office subkeys

Note: Removing the following registry keys may reset customized user
settings for your Microsoft Office programs.

1. Close all the applications.
2. Click on Start->Run, type in REGEDIT and click on OK.
3. Locate and select the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0

4. Right click on 11.0 and rename them to Old11.
5. Close the Registry Editor.

2nd. Detect and Repair Office 2003


1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click Change/Remove Programs on the left pane.
4. Highlight Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 on the right pane
and click Change.
5. Insert the correct version of CD when it requires.
6. Select “Reinstall and Repair” and click Next.
7. Select “Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation”.
8. Click Install and wait the process to end.

3rd. Install the Updates
