Microsoft Virtual Machine Update ??

I have my WinXP Pro SP2 set up to notify me of any Windows Updates, and
lately I have been getting notified of an update for Windows Virtual
Machine.
However, when I go to install the update, the process notifies me that it
will only update over an existing installation of Windows Virtual
Machine...which I apparently do not have, and as far as I can tell MS is no
longer supporting Windows Virtual Machine.

Problem is, I cannot find a way for Windows Update to delete that particular
update if I have no use for it. I have it hidden at the moment, but it keeps
popping up whenever there are updates available that are pertinent to my
Laptop.

Is there some way I can permanently delete that update so that I am no
longer notified of it...I just want it gone.

Search on here for Windows java virtual machine. There are a couple of
threads and a fix that I used.

Apparently, a download put in some files for Microsoft Virtual Machine on my
computer. Windows update saw the files and kept trying to update the java
virtual machine, although I use Sun Java 5.09.
Major geeks has an old Microsoft uninstall file for Microsoft Java Virtual
Machine at http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4158
After running this application, Windows update does not show that I need the
update. It worked for me with XP SP2 and I.E. 7 , but, use at your own
risk.

Steve,

Found the msjava58310 and extracted the files from the .exe. There are
more files involved then I had previously recalled. Plus registry
settings. Haven't explored the compressed folders yet, but there doesn't
appear to be a file that's even similarly named to any of the Sun java
package.

I still would like to know just why WU is prompting the install of the
MSJVM to systems that do not have it installed.
Perhaps Nick will assist ?

Only one other thing I can think of that may have put MJVM files on my
computer. Add ones for Internet explorer, I remember now that I added "The
Weather Channel" toolbar to I.E. I did remove it after evaluation but,
perhaps it did not remove everything. Only thing I can think of that might
require Java.

I would be glad to assist, but I downloaded and ran the file Steve put me on
to, and that seems to have done the trick. I do though have the same
question as you did, and that was why WU was indicating I needed the update
for something I don't even have installed.

In any case, thank you so much for your help... all is resolved. )

Steve's the one who pointed you to the resolution, Nick. I was just
along for the ride.
Methinks it may have something to do more with a registry setting rather
than the presence of a file. If it was a file it could have resided in
either IE's cache or the User Temp folder.

Oh well ... this is getting to be like the Holy Grail, except it's the
Monty Python version

I installed the weather channel toolbar for internet explorer 7
yesterday and had same problem with microsoft virtual machine update
from 2004 and had to uninstall the weather toolbar from add remove
programs. Then I flushed the software distribution folder and that did
not take care of the update keep coming back. It was always saying
already downloaded and to install it. So what I did was to do a system
restore to last Friday and that worked. I will not install weather
channel toolbar again. Way to many problems with microsoft automatic
updates after installing it.
