"microsoft windows has stopped working"

Over the weekend I picked up a virus, which was mostly caught in time. I
cleaned my system, deleted the three files, and rebooted.

Since then, As my computer reboots, I get a "microsoft windows has stopped
working" message, then windows reboots. Even when I start up the computer in
safe mode, the same thing happens.

I have a dell deminsion 2500 running vista.

Sorry? Am I hearing this right? Vista? With a VIRUS? Tell Mr Gates
IMMEDIATELY!

I have the same problem except when I was updating, I guess activex told my
computer to restart to install the update. Now that is all it does. Can't
even get it going in safe mode!
