Try this (worked for me).
Assumptions
o You use XP-Home
o You have more than one user i.d. classed as administrator
Possible Solution:
o Log in to one of the admin user i.d. that is NOT the one for
which the update fails.
o Try update again.
o If it still fails, go through each user i.d. with admin status
in turn. Hopefully one of these will permit the update.
If none of the admin user accounts permit a successful install you could
try creating a NEW user i.d. with admin privileges.
I am becoming increasingly convinced that some recent windows update has
imposed unworkable registry permissions - I have had trouble with
Windows Update install, Flash Player install, MS Anti-spyware install.
All of the solutions for these required either a switch to a different
user i.d. to circumnavigate errors in registry permissions.
