For those that have had the same problem, I'll let you know how it's worked
out for me.
1. Uninstalled IE7 with the control panel. Quite painless. The software
will automatically go back to IE6 (this is something I didn't realize
previously). I did create a system restore point and turned off automatic
updates as recommended in the link that PA Bear provided. Just in case, I
also deleted the Sofware Distribution folder and renamed the catroot2 folder.
2. After system restart I went to the update website. Success. With my lap
top and desk top I had 35/63 updates respectively. Thanks Microsoft for
making me think I was receiving auto updates.
3. Call it foolish or feeling lucky, but I thought I'd go ahead and
reinstall IE7. (Sorry PA Bear, I had to give it a go) Everything installed
fine, and I was able to verify operation of the update web page. Since luck
was in my favor, I left the toolbars (yahoo, google), with continued success.
4. After success was validated on both units, I set another system restore
point and turned on the automatic update feature. We'll see where it goes
from here.
