Microsoft Windows Update kept failing - no help from Microsoft

Posted under general discussions: Microsoft Windows Update kept failing for
reasons unknown. Probably need to reinstall updating software but no easy way
of doing so. Could not get useful help either by e-mail or in Knowledge Base.
In the end reinstalled Windows XP with SP2 from CD then revisited Microsoft
Update where updating software was reinstalled. There should be an easier way
!!!
Any ideas ?

The Windows Update database has the unfortunate habit of corrupting itself
particularly if the system doesn't shut down cleanly after performing an
update or reboots randomly during a critical operation. A good way to avoid
this is to switch automatic updates to just notify. When downloads are ready
to install: Reboot. Install updates. Reboot again.
