Microsoft/Windows Update Not Working ?

I've been having touble with Microsoft/Windows Update on a Windows 2000
SP4 Computer. I'm thinking it is very likely that MS has changed the
program in a way that is causing my problems.

I successfully ran Updates about a month ago. Last week, it asked me to
install the WGA Windows Gebuine Advantage tool, it would not install, I
spent a couple unproductive hours on the phone with MS, later I find a
posting on how to manually download and install it, and did so.

Then I found that updates would not install, but I could go from the
custom option to more details to the manual download and install
option. So I installed the critical updates.

Today, I find that when I select this button I get a message saying
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you
are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the
problem". Since this is different from yesterday and I haven't really
messed with the system, I figure they made a change that made my life
worse.

The express option gives the same error.

I see a number of postings about a number of problems people are having
with Update.

I'm thinking that if I wait until next week something different will
happen.

Any comments?

Charlie, I am getting the same message where "the website has encountered a
problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view". I have gotten
it for two days. It is getting late for me, and I may try for support by the
weekend. I'm sorry I can't help, only letting you know that you are not
alone.

I first got that error message months ago. I proceeded to get online
assistance. I was sent lists of things to do. I tried them all, with no
change. It took me longer than a few days to find the time to complete my
last "assignment". However, I did, and wrote back my response. I never
heard anything back and stopped trying. It's not as though we got this
software for a song and a dance. You'd think (maybe not) that Mr. Gates
would address how demanding and problemmatic his precious software can be.

Good Morning! I have the same problem and have tried regular install and
customer install and neither one will work. My understanding is a lot of
security downloads are available but I can not until the validation get's
installed. My laptop worked fine though and installed all the updates
afterwards. How do you manual install the valadation?

i had the same problem. Microsoft emailed the folloiwng solution which
did
work.

First, please let me know if the Windows system has been activated
before
the validation. If not, I recommend we activate it first. We can
contact
Microsoft Activation Center at 888-571-2048 (toll free) or 716-871-2929
to
activate Windows.

If the WGA issue occurred when the Windows system has been activated,
it was
likely caused by one of the following factors:

1. A security program running background prevents the validation tool
from
running properly.
2. The WGA engine was not installed or running properly.

We can take the following steps and see if the issue can be resolved.

Step 1: Disable the security programs temporarily
==========================
The following programs can prevent the validation tool from running
properly. I suggest we disable them temporarily to test the issue:

Norton Security programs
Panda Antivirus programs
Web Accelarator programs
Anti-Spyware programs

If any of the above programs cause the issue, please check if it can be
re-configured to accept the WGA ActiveX control. Otherwise, please
temporarily disabled to enable the WGA validation tool. However, please
re-enable the application after we complete the troubleshooting steps.

Step 2: Install the WGA engine manually
==========================
The WGA engine may have been already installed but is not working
properly.
We can use the following steps to reinstall it. This will ensure the
engine
files be copied and registered properly.

1. Download the ActiveX cab file from the following link and then save
it to
the Desktop.

http://download.microsoft.com/ download/a/c/f/acfe4666-1faf-4
3fd-b6fb-...

Open the downloaded cab file and we will find the following three
files:

GWFSPIDGen.dll
LegitCheckControl.dll
LegitCheckControl.inf

2. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "%windir%\system32" (without
quotations) and press Enter. Copy the GWFSPIDGen.dll and
LegitCheckControl.dll files into the opened system32 folder.

3. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "REGSVR32 LegitCheckControl.dll"
(without the quotations) and press Enter. We will see a popup message
state
this process succeeded.

4. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "inf" (without quotations) and
press
Enter. Copy the LegitCheckControl.inf file into the opened inf folder.

5. Right click on the copied LegitCheckControl.inf file in the inf
folder,
and then choose Install. The WGA engine will be installed
automatically.

After we finish the above steps, please restart the computer and try to
validate the Windows again.

I hate to clutter this group up this way, but a day later without my
having changed anything, the error "The website has encountered a
problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view" is not
ptresent. I do, howvere, still have to go through the procedure of
selecting more details and manually downloading any update I want. I
suspect that if I wait patiently this too may pass. ???

Thanks! My Windows Updates also mysteriously seemed to correct itself. Got
past that one. Take care.
