microsoft/windows update won't install

Im running win2k and trying to update my OS. When i run microsoft update it
finds the programs to download. I can also download them to the computer but
then it won't install. I can download them one by one and install if I use
download centre though. I don't get a errormessege and when i check old
updates the ones that didn't work are not listed.
