microsoft word/e-mail attachments

XP, receive e-mail (OE) wth attchment(s); click on attachmrnt(s), get WORD,
ask to open document, get page with notice superimposed: "Abnormal program
termination". when click off notice page disappears. unable to locate
document in system. problem appeared week ago, and continues.

How does this relate to Windows Update?

If you save the DOC attachment(s) to your HDD first, can you open it/them?
