A recurring error message appears when closing down Works 4.0. It states:
cannot write to registry database. Is there any remedy for this nuisance,
please? Thank you.

Are you logged in as an administrator? If not, Vista might limit your
access to the windows registry, more than XP, 98, etc.

However, note that latest version of Works is 9, and that claims to be
Vista-compatible.

But, you are using version 4.

It probably pre-dates Vista by many years. (In fact, I found a book at
Amazon.com called "Learning Works 4 for Windows 95", which implies it may
date back to long before XP, even before 98).

Thus, version 4 might simply be too old to work with Vista, or might be too
old to run on your hardware.

If you like Works, consider upgrading to version 9.

Or, try Open Office versions 2.3, which is free at:

http://www.openoffice.org/

It claims to also be Vista-compatible. And, my experiences with it under XP
are quite positive.

Note that Open Office is more like the full Microsoft Office, than MS Works.
That is, it has a lot of extra features. However, if you do not want to use
them, you can forget they even exist.

I am logged in as administrator so I think that the problem lies with the immense age of Works 4.0 It's just that that particular version suits my needs admirably, but I suppose I'd better come screaming into the 21st century and get my self a bit more up-to-date! Thank you again.

Try right clicking the icon for Works and select "Run as Administrator"
