I have a Microsoft Works update that came up. When I tried to install it, it
asked for a Works disk. But, with my computer I never got a disk for it. It
was already in the system on my laptop. What should I do? It won't let me
do the update without it.

I have the same situation as you both with the Works-yeah right!-Update on
Tues. It wants me to find a file with an extension that vista tells me is
invalid. Sorry, don't have the File name at hand but I believe it Began
w/"M". I get the error code 8024002D- which just opens a FAQ about
installing updates/problems. I only found this helpful to root around trying
to find the damn thing and chasing my tail. I did get a message about my
filepath not being shared, but considering it's only one machine with a user
and administrator accounts. I was trying to narrow the problem down but just
can't get it to all go together- a. Find the file->b. Invalid File Ext.->c.
Network = I don't know!! Sorry this is my first time here. Hope this helps
others so they can help me!

I looked in my box that my laptop came in and I guess I did find the disk. I
put it in and it worked.

Nathan "found" his Works CD. OEM's are too often simply providing disc images
of the installed software on a Restore Partition. As a consumer, you can
demand CDs/DVDs for the programs installed. If they are not forthcoming,
simply avoid purchasing anything from the OEM manufacturer. If you are
purchasing from a Chain Store supplier, make them open the box and show you
the CDs/DVDs. DO NOT fall for the "We can make Restore Discs for you" for XX
dollars. Just buy from a company that provides the software on CD/DVD. Why
should the consumer surrender Hard Drive space because an OEM manufacturer is
cheap? Demand the hard copies of your software. You are paying for it!

I am getting the same error. When I checked the version of Microsoft Works I
have it is 8.5 not 8. Also when you say found the disk, does it say
Microsoft Works? I have a disk that is labeled Office Home and Student 2007.
Is Works part of that? I thought that it came pre-installed on my computer.
I have restore and back up disks as well. It keeps saying it can not find
file Works8.msi. The solution offered later in this thread does not seem
to apply to my situation either.

Feedback is appreciated from all.

Download and *save* KB955428_en-US.cab:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Once the download completes close all open browsers and programs.
Right click KB955428_en-US.cab and choose Extract All.
Either double click the file that is extracted or, right click and
choose Install to install KB9455428.
