Is this legit? If so, I would guess it must be somehow related to
Microsoft's latest 'corrections' of their friggin 'genuine
advantage' (=for Microsoft) program. (No, I buy all my computers from
major vendors with pre-installed *LEGITIMATE* copies of Windows, but
Microsoft has to assume that I'm guilty until proven innocent--by
their buggy software. I see I've gotten sidetracked again...)

Not sure because I don't use this machine so often, so the complaints
on other machines about the new version of Microsoft's Advantage
started several days before I noticed this machine's new complaint. I
think it is actually a pre-complaint so that it can start the other
complaint--but I also worry that it could be some kind of attack on
Microsoft's terrible security.

Oh yeah, I suppose I better say what's going on, hadn't I? When I boot
this machine in Windows (normally I use Ubuntu Linux--and the machine
runs much better, too), it shows a popup window telling me that it
can't check for updates unless I upgrade Microsoft's dot net. I
suppose that's legit, but this is Microsoft, so who knows? Anyone else
seeing this?

you can download .net as an exe and install it
and you should
..net is an important update
just as important as a kernal update in linux

you can use your computer as it is and not install any updates

or you can update and your software will probably run with
fewer crashes and errors.

Mr gates I need a tech support job
you outsource to india and also hire through the H1 Visa program

I am not willing to move to india to get one of your jobs
and I dont think i should have to do that
but I am in serious need of work and I would like to
have a job that does not include a mop and a bucket

you are worth so much you could hire me or others
and it would not hurt you or your company
as a matter of fact it would help you because we would
be dedicated to you

and we have been dedicated to you for many years
when the gov went after you we supported you
when linux crews went after you we supported you
when Europe sues you we support you

but we are not good enough to work for you

soon my and others support of you will end
you do not deserve it anymore
it was given to you freely
but now you need to repay your debts

and yes I used a Mac 128k
and a 8088
and windows 1.0 shipped with Pagemaker

I supported you
I helped you in the browser wars

REPAY YOUR DEBT
IM CALLING IN THE LOAN

For the record, Microsoft .NET Framework is not new. It has been around
for several years and some applications, both Microsoft and non-Microsoft
have been programmed to use it. But .NET is optional in the sense that if
there are no applications that need .NET Framework, then do not install it.
Furthermore, Microsoft Genuine Advantage plays a minor role in getting the
critical updates into one's computer and as for other non-Microsoft updates,
go to their sources.

Finally, if one is so sure of the legitimacy of one's installed Microsoft
applications, gather together fellow complainers and start a heavy-duty
media campaign and initiate class-action lawsuits. Or vote one's dismay
with one's feet.

No. Please post the exact text of the message. Thanks.

That will be difficult. As I noted, I rarely run that machine with
Windows, but I'll try to remember to provide your detailed notes at a
time when it is *MUTUALLY* convenient. Of course there's no reason
Microsoft should care about the convenience of the customer, right?

The only details I can recall from the error message are that it is
complaining about being unable to run Window Update and that it wants
the 1.1 version of dot net, which seems odd, since I'm pretty sure
that the current release is 2.something. I do know that at least two
of my XP machines are in the state of complaining about wanting a new
version of Microsoft's Advantage installed, but I haven't been in a
hurry for Microsoft's Convenience, either. Another patch Tuesday is
coming, and I generally prefer to do as much as possible of that
mucking about at the same time.

The WGA Notification application is NOT a required update. HIGHLY
recommend that you do NOT install it.
AFAIK, the differing versions of .NET have nothing to do with this
'update'.
Different software needs different versions of .NET to run on and that's
dependent upon whom wrote said software. Have yet to see Windows Update
prompt one of my systems to install ANY version of .NET in order to be
able to do updating.
That's why I asked what the exact message was. <w>

Well, in accord with Murphy's laws, the machine in question lost its
power supply, and it turns out to be an odd one that I'm having to
special order from China (after several weeks of chasing around
locally). Anyway, from memory I can swear that it explicitly mentions
Microsoft's advantage program and Dot Net version 1.1... Not sure when
the power supply will arrive.
