Might be a simple question?

Couldn't find a solution through google searches or microsoft for this
problem. After installing SP2, my computer went into infinite
reboot-shutdown mode. Tried all of the microsoft suggestions without
success (eg. auto recover, repair etc), so I reinstalled XP pro on a
different partition of my hard drive (D). Now I can boot up, but I would
like to remove SP2 from my C drive. However when I use the add and remove
utility it only shows software on the D drive. I can't figure out how to
access the SP2 software from the "add and remove" utility. I've tried using
the cmd approach suggested by microsoft, but it doesn't see the same
directories (even if I change to the C drive).

So, is there a simple way for me to remove the SP2 installed on C when I
boot up on using XP on the D partition?
Sorry if this isn't clear, I would just really like to have my computer back
the way it was two days ago.
Thanks for any help,
Tim

Hi

You cannot use this method to remove SP2. You might need to bite the
bullet and do a format/clean install.

Thanks, I appreciate your candor. I might wait a bit before I do it, but it
has been two days without much help so far.

I have to sympathize with those of you that work in the computer field. I
find it unbelievable that microsoft advises me to update my computer with
SP2 and upon doing so makes it non-functional. The support is abysmal and
every time I say to myself "I'll take my money elsewhere" I realize that
there is no "elsewhere". If I had to deal with this kind of product and
service all the time I would probably go postal (or medicate!).
And here I thought Dilbert was just a comic strip.

PS- I guess I could always go back to Macintosh............

Tim,

I think that the answer to your question is: no, you can not do much
about removing software from another partition. However,
I don't think that you should give up on your main partition too quickly.

Perhaps you might be able to edit its registry by loading an appropriate
hive, changing some registry values, and then saving that hive.
(E.g. that is something which NT4 users might do to prevent automatic
reboot and facilitate capture their "blue screen" data.)
But it looks as if there may now be an easier way to do that specific task
from an F8 mode boot:

<title>KB315222 - A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP</title>

Have you tried booting in safe mode? (e.g. to prevent your drivers from
loading)

You can find lots of discussion of resolving problems
for example with the DEP feature on new processors.
Some of that discussion or at least links to it is even found on this
newsgroup but I think you will find that you get better information
from some of the WindowsXP newsgroups.

Hah. Torgeir posts about this! He posts a link to Chris Quirke's site.
(OE find for quirk works. Google search would probably need at least
cquirke as a whole word argument.)

Thanks to those that responded. Unfortunately I couldn't get the computer
to boot up in any mode from the C partition (each of the suggestions from
Microsoft started with using the "Start" menu, which of course I could never
get to!) so after spending way too much time on this (two days) I bit the
bullet, copied all my personal files and reinstalled XP on the C partition.
Probably not the best solution, but I'm not computer litterate enough to
have solved the problem. It would probably have taken me longer to figure
out a solution than reinstalling most of my software. Fortunately it was a
home computer.
