Migrating DC from Win2k3 to Win2k8

Hi -

I'm planning on migrating a small domain (one DC, about 20 users) from
Win2k3 to Win2k8. I understand that I need to run forestprep on the Win2k3
DC and adprep on the Win2k8 box. However, the Win2k3 box is also running
DNS, DHCP, WINS and Exchange 2003. I want to move Exchange to a VM on
another Win2k8 box and plan to do do that after the DC migration. What I am
not sure about is the proper order in which I should make these moves (from
the Win2k3 DC to Win2k8). Are there any potential problems with moving the
DC functions off of the Win2k3 box before migrating Exchange?

Any ideas or help will be appreciated.

LJP

Hello Western,

You have to prepare the exisiting domain with adprep /forestprep adprep /domainprep
and adprep /rodcprep on the 2003 DC, nothing from adprep has to run the 2008
machine.

You can not upgrade the 2003 with exchange 2003 installed. Exchange 2003
does NOT run on windows server 2008. It can be used in a domain with 2008
DCs installed when at least Exchange 2003 SP2 is installed.

Also to demote the 2003 DC you have to uninstall Exchange first.

So either install 2008 on a new machine from scratch, my preferred an suggested
methode, or move exchange to another server and uninstall it form the DC
and then do the inplace upgrade from 2003 to 2008.
