My windows seem to randomly minimise and maximise when I use my touch pad -
what am I doing wrong?

Have you installed the latest Touch Pad drivers for your laptop? Have you
checked your System settings to see if there is a tool possibly to control
its sensitivity?

For information and a fix for getting Vista to remember your preferred
settings for folder opening, see this tutorial.

It's a setting in your touchpad driver. I know that mine is set such
that tapping the upper-right corner toggles between full-screen and
normal.

Look in your notification area (right end of the taskbar) for the
touchpad's icon. This will vary depending on the manufacturer, but on
my machine, I double-click the icon to get the "Mouse Properties"
dialog box, then click the "Device settings" tab, and click the
"Settings..." buttons on that page. That gets me the "Synaptics
Touchpad properties dialog". The setting I'm talking about is under
"Tapping/Tap Zones". Look around in that dialog, you'll find that your
touchpad is capable of lots of things.
