Has anyone had their contact list missing after installing The Windows Live
Mail update and if so is there a way to recover the contacts.

There haven't been any updates to my knowledge, so it's not easy to give any
sensible response. If you tell us what you did, with which version of WLMail
(the current one is 12.0.1606) and on which OS, someone will undoubtedly be
able to help you.

Thank you for your reply. We do not have Windows Live/MSN/Hotmail accounts
but use Windows Live Mail to get email from other email accounts. I installed
update kb944990 from the Windows Update site and after it installed all the
contacts were gone. This happened on 2 computers running XP Home SP2. Before
the update we had no Export link under the file menu for contacts, only
Import. Now after the update we have both but no contacts. All the contact
groups are missing as well. The default location of the data only had a
contactcoll.cache file. Why would an update delete an important file like a
contact list? I was able to use Windows Restore on 1 computer, so far, to get
the contacts back. By the way, all the email accounts it checks were there
and all emails were there. Only the contacts seem to be affected.

The only kb944990 I am familiar with was intended for Vista, not for any
version of XP. You may have to use a system restore to before this update
was installed.

It may also be useful to try the fix that is sometimes needed in the Windows
Mail program that comes with Vista: Open the Contacts windows. Right
click in the empty space in the right side of this windows, then click on
Customize This Folder, then the triangle, then Contacts, then Apply, then
OK. Close the Contacts window.

After some more research I have found that I had and earlier version of WLM
(Beta) and the kb944990 update was to update Beta's to the current version.
Windows Updates had been off on these computers for a while so I'm running
into this now. The update came out 11/07. I guess there is an issue in the
upgrade.

I don't think so. That portmanteau update replaced any beta versions of the
Live suite with RTM versions, and for the most part it worked very well.
Contacts are linked to the Live ID you use to sign in with. If you don't
sign in, then you will only see contacts you have actually added to the
Default contacts list. You say you don't have any Hotmail account, but do
you have a Live ID that you used to sign in with during the beta? If so, use
it to sign in again (the button at the top right hand corner of the screen)
and then check your contacts. Do the same for any other Live ID you may have
used. Alternatively, if you are signing in and see no contacts, go to
Options > Connection > Stop signing in, then check your contacts again.
Lastly, if those steps give no joy, if your contacts list came from another
source, like Outlook Express (WAB), then they are probably still there and
can be imported (in a Contacts window, File > Import > Windows address
book).

Dave,
The op was originally referring to this 'middle ages' update, applicable to pre-RTM Live application installations and not o/s
dependent.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944990/en-us

Either via that update or manually, the current available version is now installed.
