Windows XP Home + SP2
I have looked at the many posts to deal with error 0x80240030 but those I
can try do not work while the most likely solutions require me to use
proxycfg but this is not recognised as a command. Some other commands are
also not available including chkdsk. The problem occured "out of the blue"
without any intevention by me - the posts go back a few years is this a
weakness in Windows XP?
Help would be very much appreciated.

First, you should check whether hard disk corruption in directories has
resulted in files becoming apparently missing.

Open "My Computer", right click on Drive C:, select "Properties", click
"Tools", click "Check Now", check both check-boxes, click "Start", and allow
Windows to restart as instructed. When Windows restarts, a complete check
of Drive C: will be made, which might take a long time.

The next stage is to check that all protected Windows files are present.
You will need your Windows installation CD-ROM. Open a command prompt
windows, and type the command:

sfc /scannow

This might take 45 to 60 minutes.

If this does not cure your problem, then you should perform a "Repair
re-installation" of Windows (see
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...ps/doug92.mspx
for method - this will leave all your other installations intact). If your
original Windows CD-ROM did not contain SP2, then the next thing you will
need to do is re-apply SP2, and after that use Windows Update to re-install
all subsequent updates.

Thank you very much for the reply - a stepwise clear method suits my brain! I
got as far as the sfc prompt which was (predictably?) not recognised. I do
not know whether I misunderstood the repair re-installation of Windows but
the original (OEM) disk warned me that all data would be lost. I followed
this path because I had good backup (Acronis). Everything is fine now and the
experience has contributed to the never ending learning process.
