I installed Vista BETA2 on my Toshiba Equium L10 Laptop and the installation
went well but I did notice that there was no "battery icon" in the systray
and without this, I cannot tell when my laptop batery is running low.
I checked in Device Manager and noticed that there was no "Battery" entry
under "Computer". The "Battery" entry should have "Microsoft SMART Battery"
and "Microsoft SMART Battery Subsystem" but none of this is shown because
the "Battery" is missing. I then noticed that there was an "unknown device"
further down.
Upon checking the properties of the "unknown device" ihe properties, they
show that it is a Microsoft ACPI Complaint Embedded Controller and
aftersearching around the various forums on the internet, the unknown device
appears to be the "Microsoft SMART Battery Subsystem" which my notebook and
many other users notebooks use.
When using Win XP with SP2, there was support for the Microsoft SMART
Battery and SMART Battery Subsystem, but in Vista, there is, at least for
the time being, there is no
support.
Apart from this, Vista works well on my L10but the upshot of this lack of
support means that I have no systray icon to warn me of a low battery and
this afternoon whilst using the notebook, it just
turned off because the battery was flat.
Can anyone tell me if there is a driver available for this hardware, or when
Microsoft will include support for the Microsoft SMART Battery Subsystem in
Windows Vista either via Windows Update or in Vista RC1?
Regards
Dave
