Somehow the exe file association has been removed from the file association
menu. As a result I am unable to update Windows. I have tried the exe
registry fix found in this forum and have used a registry fix program and
have not resolved the issue. Anyone know how to add the exe back to the file
association menu? If I use explorer to open the windows update file, which
program do I need to open it with???

If you used this fix from MVP Ramesh:

File association fixes for Windows Vista:
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/

and it didn't work, here are a few suggestions. Obviously if you didn't
use Ramesh's fix, try that first.

1. Do a System Restore to before the problem occurred, assuming the
problem occurred very recently. To run System Restore, go to the Start
Orb and in the Start Search box type "System Restore" without the
quotes. System Restore will appear in the Programs result. Click on it,
allow the UAC prompt, and follow the wizard.

2. If that doesn't work, open a command prompt elevated and run the
System File Checker.

Click Start
Type: cmd [enter]
Right-click cmd when it appears under Programs
Click Run As Administrator

At the command prompt, type:

sfc /scannow [enter]

3. This assumes that the loss of the .exe association is not because of
virus/malware infection.
