Missing Explorer in file folders

I use to store the progs I need all the time
in a folder on my PC's desktop.
Via clicking organize-layout-navigation pane in this folder I remove the
nav.pane and have all the space in the folder to store the progs.
This went fine in XP. In my new Vista Home Premium machine I did the same
and in ALL the folders on this PC the navigation pane vanishes.
I suppose I've to check, or uncheck, something but I don't know what!
Can anyone out there give my advice on this matter?
Thanks in advance.
Regards, HanLee
