My PC is on Vista with Office XP.

Opening the computer today, I found a Word file missing, whose icon I had on
the desktop as a shortcut. The shortcut and the file are missing.
Start/Search does not show it. Clicking on the Recycle Bin icon on the
desktop shows nothing in the opening window.

How can I find where has that file gone to and/or how can I recover it?

If a full search for the doc doesnt locate it, its gone
Restore the doc from your backups, you do have data backups dont you?
Saving docs on the desktop is not reccommended

Although unlikely, you might be seeing the first signs of a soon-to-be bad
drive. One decent diagnostics program I've run across is the one from
Western Digital, which seems to work across all brands of drives. Best of
all, it's free. Here's the download link if you want to give it a shot:
