missing hal.dll file

When my computer tried to rollback it failed and now I can not start xp
because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows
root>\system32\hal.dll
What can I do?

Unless your computer is one with a recovery process, if you have the XP
install CD, boot to the cd, at the first option page enter repair with
recovery console, login and at the command prompt enter fixboot press
enter, then enter fixmbr press enter. If that doesn't fix your
problem, you should provide information about your computer and exactly how
your hard drive (s) are set up.
It was recommended to make a full backup before you started the install, and
it may then be easier to restore that.

Start your pc with your xp cd and go to recovery console and login then type
expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\winxp\system\hal.dll this shold replace your old
hal.dll

Sorry guy it is c:\system32\hal.dll not c:\system\hal.dll

I am running a Dell XPS 600 with Pentium D 830 (3Ghz), 2GB Ram, and 320GB
Performance RAID 0 HD. I tried fixboot and fixmbr and the computer did the
same thing when it restarted. I also tried expand d:\i386\hal,dl_
c:winxp\system32\hal.dll and it told me that access is denied. I don't know
what else to try.

This is what it says when I type bixmbr
This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record.
FIXMBR may damage your partition tables if you proceed
This could cause all the partitions on the current hard disk to become
inaccessible.
If you are not having problems accessing your drive, do not continue.

Just a side note, I have never partitioned this hd.

It sounds like your computer may have a hidden recovery partition. You
should check with Dell, either their website or the support line to get the
download you need to replace the non-standard mbr
