Missing Laptop Sound Volume Indicator

Just got an HP laptop with the little volume slide thingy above the keybaord.
When I first got it, a numerical volume indicator would appear in the upper
right hand corner of the screen. Now it doesn't. Does anyone have any idea
how I get it back? I suspect it's visibility is driven by a property buried
somewhere, but i have no idea where. Thanks.
