Missing Parts of Windows Vista

To Whom It May Concern,

I looked around Microsoft's website for place to drop comments about Vista
after having used it for a couple weeks. I didnt see anything that popped
out as the right place for this so i will post it here.

Overall Vista feels pretty nice to work in but at the moment I am bothered
by one thing in particular. In windows xp I could work with my remote
development partners by sharing a desktop using netmeeting. I spent hundreds
of dollars to upgrade to windows vista and what I ended up with was a less
capable product (no netmeeting). I found a description of how to get
netmeeting installed on vista which is fine but you still cannot share your
desktop. Meeting Space is supposed to replace netmeeting but that does not
work over the internet (it is meant for people working together in the same
room or office) so that doesnt work for me. Live Meeting is supposed to work
over the internet but you have to pay a lot of money to buy it seperately (I
have Office 2007 standard and that apparently isn't an expensive enough
version of office to include live meeting). So now i have no way to share my
desktop without using third party tools (and the free vnc tools still have
some kinks to get worked out to run right on Vista). It just feels like this
aspect of the operating system took a step backward (unless I am missing
something).

This is a bit of an annoyance, I agree.

As you've probably worked out, you can still use NetMeeting to remote into
other machines to view their desktops.

'Logmein' is supposed to be a good substitute for sharing your own desktop,
although I've not tried it.

Alternatively if you set up dual boot with XP, you can reboot in XP and
share your desktop from there.

It is simple. You buy Live Meeting. Most companies are doing that. They
pay through the nose in cost and implementation cost.

A hotfix is available to install NetMeeting 3.02 on computers that are
running Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/927853

Or you could get Office Live Meeting, which is the replacement.

Ah yes. You are. With my previous reply, I missed that you are trying to
conference over the internet. Office Live Meeting is for meetings within
corporate LAN, and Meeting Space is for file exchange in meetings in the
same room.

Just ordinary Windows Live Messenger is what you should be using to replace
ancient NetMeeting!

I'll just add what I use myself. I have a business partner in San Francisco
(I'm in London) and we just use Skype, while using TeamViewer together.
This is because we are discussing things on CAD and 3D programs, which the
other systems do not allow. We do not use video, as Skype voice calls along
with TeamViewer saturate our internet connection bandwidth enough. Of
course this way is not suitable for more two people.
