Hello, all. I know that this has been covered in quite a few othe
threads, but I've yet to find a solution to my issue and am hopin
someone may be able to assist me.

I recently had to replace my desktop, which was using XP, with a ne
system that is running Vista. I know my way around a system fairl
well, but I'm having trouble finding out how to make my on-screen volum
meter return to me. I know it's a small issue, but it's driving me nuts
From what I've found on the net it seems fairly common in some models
but I've yet to see it addressed in mine. I'm using a Gatway, mode
DX4710-09. I SWEAR it was working when I first got it, but i
disappeared. It bothered me so much that I actually did a clean instal
of Vista, to no avail. All of my drivers are current and I'v
uninstalled and reinstalled my keyboard as well. I'm having a har
enough time getting used to Vista and it's quirks, and this is really
thorn in my side. Any suggestions

Thanks

Michell

Hi Michelle,

The on-screen volume meter is not a function of Vista, it is a function of
the software that supports the audio system on your machine. Either it
offers it or it doesn't, you should check with Gateway as to whether or not
it does. If it did not appear with a clean install of Gateway's recovery
media (return to factory state), then I suspect it never existed on your
system.

As Rick mentioned, the sound system is generally controlled by the
Driver software designed to match the sound card. In your case that
should be a "Realtek" sound card as the Gateway site suggests.

http://support.gateway.com/support/d...n&param=DX4710

Now, I don't know if Gateway put any kind of auto updating software on
their machines, but occasionally you will find "Hardware" drivers on the
Windows update site - these are almost always optional but it's possible
that you actually need the latest drivers because of some change
Microsoft had to make in Vista that caused the icon to vanish.

Can you connect anything that happened with the icon vanishing? Have you
tried downloading the drivers from Gateway?

Hi, Charlie. It's not actually the icon that is missing, but the mete
that appears on the monitor when you use the Vol- or Vol+ on th
keyboard. The icon in my task tray is still there, both for the soun
and Realtek's. I've actually been to their site and downloaded th
latest driver from there as well, still no luck. And so far, Gatway'
only assistance is suggest an original factory restore. I'm stil
hoping that there's just something stupid that I'm missing

Or was included with the custom keyboard driver.

Reinstall the OEM keyboard driver. The on-screen volume level display is
most
likely part of that software.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately I've tried that twice, no luck
