Hi, I'm trying to update an elderly neighbours pc running xp, unfortunately
the system has never been updated since purchase in January 2004. Attempts to
upgrade so far have ended in failure, any ideas how I can bring system upto
date?
Windows XP home edition version 2002

Tip: Reinstall Windows *before* attempting the following! Either use the
CDs that came with the machine or the hidden Recovery partition.
================================
HOW TO get WinXP SP1 fully patched:

1. Download & save the installer for WinXP SP3 to your desktop:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...8-1e1555d4f3d4

[Yes, you can skip WinXP SP2 altogether.]

2. Read & heed:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx

3. Logged in as Administrator, if necessary, double-click on the saved file
to install WinXP SP3. Follow all prompts; be patient, and reboot twice when
the install completes.

4. Do Resolution Method 2 here (trust me):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

5. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Install any required software
then click on CONTINUE | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any critical
security updates offered. Again, follow all prompts.

[I do NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update.]

6. Make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled; cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

Additional References:

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

What sort of failure? What is the malware status of the box? If it has
been connected to the Internet unpatched since January 2004, you're
probably better off saving any user data and doing a clean install of XP
from the original CD and then updating per
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

Note that you should first check to see what service pack level is on
the box. If it was purchased in 2004, it probably has sp1a. If this is
so, then you can either download sp3 or order an sp3 cd.

Earlier today I used that same manual method of registeringWUPS2.DLL FILES IN
WINDOWS XP; and, to the best of my knowledge it seemed to work. I received
messaages stating I "succeeded" but I still have not completed the part opf
the process where we have to go back into the prompt and type cd %windir%
enter and rename the SoftwareDistribution Folder ren SoftwareDistribution
SD_OLD; then, restart windows update net start WuAu Serv, exit enter and
close prompt. Whatever the deal my PC is not performing any worse and it may
be working better---I'll finish process tomorrow. Thanks for all that you
guys do for guys like me who need your help and appreciate it so much.
