Missing Windows Update DLL's

I am running Windows XP Pro, and I have not been able to run Windows Update
for a few weeks. I think the problem may have started when I went back to
Office XP from Office 2003 or trying the SP2 Beta. In the meantime, I have
tried following the suggestions on many different newgroup threads regarding
stop and starting the WU service, re-registering WU-related DLL's and even
deleting the WU-related DLL's and uinstalling IE and reinstalling it. Now I
have no Automatic Update Service running and no dll's such as wuaueng.dll. I
also have no keys under HKLM/Software/Microsoft/WindowsUpdate/Setup...When I
go to the WU webpage, it seems to download the latest software, from what I
can tell copying files upto 15% . I then get this error:

[Error number: 0x800703E3]
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page.

The discussions in the newsgroup threads to date regarding this error number
talk about re-registering the DLL's, but I am now missing them. Can someone
suggest how to proceed?
