Hi people, I'm a new member but this is probably not a new problem. I've had
various virus/hijack problems which have been largely sorted out, however, I
was trying to get any Windows Updates, (I'm on XPPro SP2) and all I got was ;
Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:
1. register or re-install files for me (recommended)
2. let me read more blah! blah! blah!
CONTINUE.
I check option 1, press continue, try to load updates & Hey Presto! I'm back
at ; Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer. To continue: blah! blah! blah!.
Can anyone out there make a suggestion that does not include a 3lb club
hammer?

I frequently have this type of problem with windows update, and I use the
following command file to resolve it. I got this off of several MVP sites.

net.exe stop wuauserv
regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgrprxy.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Just copy and paste these into a file named
"xxx.cmd" where xxx is whatever you choose.
Then, run this file in a command box or from
the "Start" - "Run" box. It will register all
appropriate dll's for windows update, or it has
so far. There are other instructions for turning
on the BITS service if you look around here.

There is something seriously wrong with the software for this message board,
as only about half of what I write actually gets posted, and it appears that
almost every message that I do write is double posted, once without my text,
and once with it. Most of the messages on this board show up as replies
without any new text in them. Somebody fix it. By the way, this occurs both
in current IE under XPPRO SP2 and under Mozilla 1.7.12. What gives.
