I have seen several posts complaining about losing their mixer controls /
volume icon / sound monitor.

I found the answer in the Knowledge Base, article 319095, "Volume Icon Is
Not Displayed iin the Notification Area, and You Receive an Error Message
When You Try to Add It". Essentially it requires getting a copy of
sndvol32.exe into %system%\system32\. ("%system%" represents your system
root, eg. "c:\windows\") If you have a Windows install disk, you can use the
'expand' command in the command prompt window: change directory (cd) to i386
on the install disk, and enter the command 'expand sndvol32.ex_
%system_root%\system32\sndvol32.exe. Note the space between sndvol32.ex_ and
%system...

HTH

"JudyC",

I am sorry that you are hitting this issue. This does not seem like a Windows
Update problem. Perhaps these other newsgroups would be more helpful:

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
microsoft.public.windowsxp
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Thank you all for your responses....even though my question was.. "where can
I download it?" Finally, I had my sister email me the .exe file and I tried
all the different ways to install, none of which worked, I ended up as a last
resort simply dragging and dropping it into my Windows system folder and it
worked!!! easy peasy! Figured it out by myself! Thanks anyway
