modem locks up

i am using messneger version 8.1 when anyone im's me it locks up my modem to
the point that i need to restart modem (dsl). i have tried 2 diff modems
supplied by dsl company same thing, however this model worse than the last
one. i have contacted modem manufacturer and they have no idea. any ideas?

I downloaded 8.5. didn't solve the problem. however it didn't lock up quite
as much as before. Any thoughts?
