Ok... i try to enter some value to hosts folder won t let me save.
i have vista X64 home premium and i m the administrator in users
profile.
So far i try:
i go to C:windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
i get
# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host
name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

i enter my value and i cant save them get the message :
Cannot create the C:........................\hostsfile. Make sure that
the path and file name are correct.

SO i make sure hosts is not read only, that etc is not read only that
driver is not read only.
Try again can t save still.

When i right click in notepad doesn t offer me to Run as administrator
because i m an administrator statue already.

So i m clueless i try to run it with cmd to get to be the ownership of
the file but the few line i wrote didn t worked.
C:users/username/cals C:..............\hosts ( solution that i read on
this forum)
SO if anyone have a answer for me.
thank s in advance
ol

Had that problem tonight. My workaround -

I open the Hosts file and added my values, then I saved the file to the
documents area as a notepad text file.

then I copied the file to the ...etc/hosts directory and went through all
the permissions saga.

Then I renamed the original hosts file to hostsold (no extension) and
renamed my hosts.txt file to hosts (again you have to go through all the
permissions saga)

This apeared to work. Of course you have to continue giving permission etc
etc etc

Painful but it worked for me.

Pehaps someone else has an easier way of taming Vista.

Although my little workaround worked for me, surely it shouldn't be this
hard......

I can edit/rename my hosts file at will as easily as I can edit any
text file in Documents.

I've no idea why all the above hoop-jumping was needed.

UAC??? Mine is disabled.

My Kaspersky AV blocks this. If I disable real time protection, I can
edit the hosts file. Alternately, if I do not disable the real time
protection, the above hoop jumping is required to get the job done.

Open the notepad by right clicking run as administrator, then open your
hosts file from the menu.

Ok i try to right click and ask run as administrator, it doesn t work
because it doesn t show me this option at all, in users profile i m set
as administrator so that s maybe why. Also i set up Norton 2009 recently
could it be the reason why. he protects my folder.
