I have just installed an HP Laserjet 1018. When I run out of paper, the
printer sends my computer a message about it, which, after reloading the
paper tray, I have to click so that the print job can resume. In XP, the
message displays immediately in my monitor, allowing me to easily click on
Retry, once I have reloaded the paper. In Vista, this involves clicking on an
Interactive Services window, which blacks out my display for a couple of
seconds, before taking me to the window I need to click on to run my print
job. After that, the monitor blacks out again, for a few more seconds, when
returning to the previous screen.
I tried disabling the Interactive Services service, but this simply stopped
the message from getting to my monitor, forcing me to turn off and then
restart the printer, which was also a pain. Is there any way to actually get
these messages, without having the display black out?
