Monitor loses frequency after installing any updates

Whenever I download and install an automatic update my monitor stops working.
I get a "frequency out of range" message. Because I have no screen I have no
way of shutting down my computer, so I just unplug it. Starting back up in
safe mode then doing the system restore helps, but this is a big pain in the
rear. Any thoughts or solutions would be appreciated.
