Monitor resolution

I just setup my new computer, a Dell 530 with Vista. I have connected my
not-that-old monitor. I get the message that the monitor workes best at
1680 x 1050 resolution. I try to select this resolution from the display >
personalize > display settings, but this setting is not available. When I
choose other settings the photos seem distorted (too wide). The help
article talks about being able to let Vista choose the best monitor
resoultion but is not clear on how to do this or on how to restore the
default settings. Help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jim

Hi,

Have you checked for an update to the display adapter driver?

hello... you need to supply to vista the monitor driver
that is usually a small ".inf" type file that tells vista
the exact make and specifications of your monitor.

You can look on the disk that came with your monitor, or you can look on the
website of the manufacturer of the monitor.

If you cant find it, post the brand and model number of the monitor and ill
find it for you

The problem is that your new computer doesn't include a video adapter
capable of properly supporting that specific resolution. Your options
are somewhat limited at this point. You can either replace (downgrade,
in effect - your current monitor is of a higher grade than the
computer's components) the monitor with something that the computer's
video adapter can support, or you can upgrade the computer with a better
quality video adapter. I'd go with the latter option, personally.

Actually, what Bruce stated is correct, and I see no response from you
to the original questioner in this thread.

It is possible however that a different driver will enable the 1680X1050
resolution desired, or that running the monitor from the VGA, instead of
the DVI connector (if so equipped), will enable the resolution. Visit
the chip or card manufacturer's WEBsite for drivers.

Both suggestions have worked here in different instances, when at first
a widescreen resolution such as 1680X1050 was not initially available on
this dated video card.
