monitor scrambled after waking from sleep

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 that I just upgraded to Vista. Everything is good
except that when I "wake" my monitor from sleep the screen is unuseable. It
rolls, jumps changes colors, totally unusable. The only way out of this is to
power down. All keys become useless besides power key. When I power back on I
get the "windows shut down..." message. After re-starting everything is ok
again as long as I do not but my computer into sleep mode again. ie, my only
power down option right now is shut down. Any help??
