Monitor is screwed up

I'm helping my mother troubleshoot a problem that occured immediatly after
downloading three windows updates on April 2nd 2006.

After rebooting, the monitor came on very dark.
It also has dark horizontal bands across it.
Adjusting the controls on the monitor barely improved the picture.
The OS is Windows 98 on a Gateway computor.
The updates were KB911565----KB905915----and KB908519

Power off and reseat the monitor cable on both ends if applicable.
Try a different monitor.
Go to the video card/computer manufacturers website and get the latest video
drivers.
