Hi

Please help. Lately everytime I try open monitoring and reporting from the
server machine a authentication dialogue box opens, it reads " connecting to
local host", if I put my sure name and password in it shows me the report,
this did not happen in the past, how do I fix this ?

Hello Michael,

Thank you for posting in the SBS newsgroup.

According to your description, I understand that when you open the
monitoring and reporting tool from the server machine, there will be a
authentication dialogue box that requires your username and password. If I
have misunderstood your concern, please don't hesitate to let me know.

To troubleshoot this issue, please help me perform the following steps:

1. Based on my research, there are four ways to view the report:

- E-mail (through the bi-weekly server status reports)

- Intranet (through http://servername/Monitoring)

- Internet ¨C Remote Web Workplace

- Monitoring and Reporting snap-in in Server Management console.

As you mentioned, if you open the monitoring and reporting from the
server machine, please confirm which way is used to open the monitoring and
reporting tool.

2. Please re-confirm the use account which is used to open the monitoring
and reporting tool and whether or not it is a member of the Domain Admins
security group.

3. If the issue persists, please check if there are any issues on the
backup snap-in. If you encountered the similar issue, we can get some
common points. This issue could be related to the permissions of the web
directory.

4. Please check the permissions on the Monitoring Virtual Directory in
IIS. The default permissions are:

- Virtual Directory permissions ¨C Read, Log visits, Index this resource

- Application Name: Monitoring

- Starting Point: <Default Web Site>\Monitoring

- Execute permissions: Scripts only

- Application pool: DefaultAppPool

- Authentication method ¨C Integrated Windows Authentication.

5. Please check the permissions on the Monitoring directory under Inetpub
to make sure they are correct. The following are the default permissions
for %systemroot%\Inetpub\Monitoring:

- Administrators: Full Control

- Creator Owner: Special - Full control on subfolders and files only.

- System: Full Control

- Users: Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read

6. If the issue persists, it may also be necessary to check the
permissions on the Default Web Site to make sure all of them are correct as
well. The default settings are as follows:

- IP Address: All unassigned

- TCP Port: 80

- Authentication Methods:

Enable Anonymous Access using the IUSR_ account and password

Integrated Windows Authentication

- Home Directory:

%systemroot%:\inetpub\wwwroot

Read, Log visits and Index this resource

Application Name: Default Application

Execute permissions: Scripts only

Applications pool: DefaultAppPool

7. Please check the Default Permissions for the wwwroot directory:

- Administrators: Full Control

- IIS_WPG: Read, List Folder Contents, Read and Execute

- IUSR: Write and Special permissions

- System: Full control

- Users: Read, List Folder Contents, Read and Execute

I'm looking forward to your update. If you have any questions or concerns,
please do not hesitate to let me know. I am always happy to be of further
assistance.

Best regards,

Nathan Liu (MSFT)

Hi Nathan

Firstly thanks for getting back to me.

Let me try and answer.

The backup snap in and monitoring give me the same problem they both require
me to authenticate myself.

However if i user the address servername/monitoring it works just fine
however if I replace the server name with its IP adress it asks for
authentication, the exact same problem exists for trend micro now as well.

I updated the rest of the contents of your email and checked it it all looks
ok.

I am running 2003 premium edition, I hope this may help you.

Hello Michael,

Thank you for your reply.

According to your description, I understand that when you click the
monitoring and reporting tool or the backup snap-in on the Server
Management Console, there will be a authentication dialogue box that
requires your username and password. If I have misunderstood your concern,
please don't hesitate to let me know.

To troubleshoot this issue, please help me perform the following testing
for collect more information:

1. Please disable the Trend micro software, then try again, can the issue
be re-produced?

2. As you mentioned, when you use http://ServerName/Monitoring to
access, it work. Based on experience, when you access the monitoring and
reporting snap-in or the backup snap-in on the Server Management Console,
it just so use the http://ServerName/Monitoring or http://ServerName/backup
link to access the web page.

3. Please help me to check the Monitoring Directory settings based on the
below steps:

a. Open Server Management Console, expand IIS, go to ServerName ->
Web Sites -> Default Web Site -> Monitoring

b. Right-click the Monitoring and select Properties, select Directory
Security, click Edit in below IP address and domain name restrictions

c. By default, all computers will be Granted access, and blank in the
below table. Then click OK.

d. Click Edit below the Secure communications, un-select Require
secure channel (SSL), enable ignore client certificates, un-select Enable
client certificate mapping. Then click OK.

Please also check the Backup Directory settings based on the above
steps.

Otherwise, if the issue persists, please help me to printer the screen when
the authentication dialogue box occurs, and printer the screen After you
type in your username and password, then attach the two picture in your
reply.

I'm looking forward to your update. If you have any questions or concerns,
please do not hesitate to let me know. I am always happy to be of further
assistance.
