I recently posted below about the shutdown and restart problems I am having
with Windows XP pro sp2.

I booted in safe mode and was able to shut down. However, a program named
sample came up as not responding - click end now to end program and continue.
When I clicked end now - the computer restarted.

I searched every where for a program named "sample" and I cannot find it on
the computer or in the startup files in msconfig.

Does this give anyone any idea on how to get the computer to shutdown or
reboot without having to remove the power source. (It's a laptop).

Thanks. Getting pretty frustrated here.

Just press and hold the start button for several seconds to force a shutdown.

Have you checked for spyware? "Sample" sounds fishy...

NOTE: After you install the above, click "Online" and get the latest updates for the database.
Update it regularly for new spy info.

Yes, I checked for spyware, trojans, worms, etc. Did the hijack log and the
computer is clean. Had it checked at techguy.com - those guys are pretty
good. Also did 2 online scans and it is coming up clean.

I thought sample sounded fishy too which is why I did all the scanning.

This is getting extremely frustrating!

Check everything again. It might be that Sample is running in a
one-pixel window that you cannot see. Try one of the online diagnostics
like www.trendmicro.com both virus and spyware scans. Does Task Manager
show anything prior to shutdown? You might check each task manager
entry with a Google search as a double-check. Google shows sample.exe
as the win32.nimda.e worm.
