I am staring at a window for a program that Vista will neither open nor
close (via task manager).
This program is Vista compatible and usually opens and closes normally.
Hence something in Vista is triggering this aberrant behavior.
The only other open program is Word 2007 with the ribbon of abomination.
Anyway, it has been at least a week since I posted about why I abhor the
abomination that is Vista.
I feel better already, although I have to reboot the f***ing computer.
Fortunately for my sanity I do most of my work on XP machines.

Sometimes using Vista SP1 I'll have the problem that an IE folder icon won't
open and rebooting solves it. I have tried to find a reason using Event
Viewer but can't. Also after you reboot try running SFC by putting up your
cmd prompt and typing in "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. Also make sure
you run spyware scans with a couple of decent scanners like the intrinsic
one in One Care or the free AdAware.

Good luck,

CH

I can't even imagine what that window must look like neither open or
closed.

Glad you're happy with linux. Everyone should understand what they get from
Apple, Open Source/Linux OS's and MSFT. Howver, if you take the attitude
that "friends tell you this and that" and don't try Vista, you don't have
any idea about how it works. I was able to use Vista as a production
machine from the first Beta in 7/05. Bugs--sure. Drivers needed to come on
board and they have.

I was critical of things I thought needed criticizing, but overall Vista
works very well for me and it's a pure urban myth that it is a "horror
story." People who think it is have a huge learning curve in how to use a
computer and refuse to take advantage to the by now ample resources on MSFT
's site that make it easy to use Vista.

MSFT has done studies where they disguised Vista and people who hated it by
perception who never used it praised what was Vista disguised in a study
called "Mojave".

Hearing from your friends Vista ia a "horror story" is simply bad
information from people who are computer challenged.

What a crock. The people who are actually computer challenged are
those that think Vista is wonderful, like the idiot Frank. The point
is NO single OS system is the right choice for everyone. It depends
what software you plan on using and to a lessor extent the hardware
you have. For the average Joe, Vista is overkill, bloated and often
sluggish and obviously way over priced. For those building their own
system I would start with Ubuntu or some other flavor of Linux and see
if it meets your needs. If not only then pop for a copy of Vista or
XP. Naturally the average Joe doesn't build his own computer and gets
a box from Dell, HP or some other assembler ending up with inferior
parts and a preloaded version of Windows. There ought to be law
against Microsoft strong arming vendors demanding their boxes come
with preinstalled Microsoft bloatware. That's almost as dumb as buying
a new car and there's a big sticker on the windshield that demands you
use a particular brand of gasoline or else.

New cars come with electric windows, sophisticated GPS systems, air
conditioning, automatic transmissions and most of the top of the line models
have a decent TV screen so you can watch movies while you are driving.
(Well, sane people just watch a movie of the road ahead.) Oh, and a ton of
plastic that third world "basic transportation vehicle" buyers never even
hear of. It's a lot like the Vista experience. You can also buy stripped
down versions, if you live in the Third World. There is a difference,
Microsoft doesn't really have any per-unit manufacturing costs. They just
have to recoup "research" and "development". I have to wonder what
"research" and "development" went into Vista.

I am not computer challenged by any means. But one day my Vista user
account spontaneously "went into a backup state", preventing me from (ever)
logging into that account again. Here's to you, Microsoft.

Cheers,

Earle

I'm not challenged by Vista, I am very disappointed by it.
Those that like it are entitled to their opinion, all I see is XP rearranged
and crippled.
It may be written on a server based code, but the actual functionality is
missing or misconfigured, and locked down so it can't be setup to MY liking
without extensive reg hacks and third party software.
Turn off "Useless Access Control" and things don't work properly, turn it on
and it irritates me enough to look at other OSs.
I was hoping for a killer OS from MS...finally... Instead, we got Vista,
pretty, but half baked.
I keep 200+ XP machines running, and I can't force myself to like Vista.
I have used it since early BETA and it has never appealed to me on any
level.
I can learn the ins & outs of ANY OS, and have used a great many in 35 years
of computing.
What I have learned about Vista has convinced me to not deploy it on my LAN.
So far 50+ older machines have gone from W98/ME/NT/W2K to open source
instead of buying new Vista machines.
If you like it, great. Not everyone does, and no amount of marketing can
make a turd taste like a Baby Ruth.
