I installed on April 18 the automatic updates: KB 908531; KB 911562; KB
890830; KB 912812; KB 911701; KB 911565 and KB 911567. I have MS Office XP
with Publisher 2000, and after installation I could no longer open MSWord
documents stored on my hard drive. I could no longer import and export my
calendar or contacts from MS Outlook using a floppy disc. I did system
restore back to April 10 and all the problems went away. I re-installed
these automatic updates again as a test, and the problems returned. I then
did system restore back to April 10 and turned off automatic updates from MS.
Problem solved. I do not intend on going through this again. Does anybody at
MS have a clue what is going on here with this update?

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install
security update MS06-015 (15 Apr-06)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-015
Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution
(908531)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-015.mspx has
been revised to v1.2 to reflect the issues in KB918165.
From the FAQ section:
"On Tuesday, April 25, Microsoft will issue a targeted re-release of
the MS06-015 update."

Now may not be the time to learn Regedit.
I suggest you use a .reg file already done for the purpose.

http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads...are-To-Web.zip

Unzip it, extract the .reg file to a folder, right-click it and select
Merge and confirm when asked.

Mr. Edwards,

I do not intend on re-installing bad updates and then trying later on April
25 to fix the problem that MS created here. This is ridiculous. MS is making
it sound like it is our responsibility as consumers to fix their error. I
cannot trust your "automatic updates" again. Please don't give me your
canned response that you've given over and over again. When April 25 rolls
around will I be safe to download the update then and NOT experience this
nonsense all over again? How do I get rid of the "yellow shield of doom"
which is on my computer prompting me to install these crappy old udates? I
don't want to download new updates on April 25 and have the old, crappy ones
also install at the same time. I'll take my chance with the phishers and the
hackers rather than have a useless computer. May be time to buy an Apple...

I have the exact same problem with my Media Center 2004 system with Office
Pro 2003. All Office apps lock up whenever I attempt to open a file using
the "file" menu or the "open" button. I also restored to April 10th but
negelected to shut off auto updates. So....I've had to do three restores so
far because the auto update has reinstalled the same bad updates three times.
I'm sometimes dumb. However, what Microsoft has done here is unforgivable.
Worse, the manner in which "Alan" has responded is an embarassment for MS.

Will someone competent at MS please fix this mess and quickly and give us
some useful support?

As I don't work for MS, I doubt they would be embarrassed by my
responses, which seem to have pleased hundreds of people with the same
problem. I really don't see what you have against the information I
supply.
