Hello! I have a problem to which I have no idea what to do. It seems I can
NOT update Windows XP (home edition) due to everything NOT passy Logo test. I
can't even tell you if I have all the needed updates (critical, etc.) for
Windows XP.
It will show that the following updates were NOT installed
KB842773 Background Intelligent Transfer (bits) 2.0 and Win Http5.1
Will show it downloading and initializing installation...Done
Then shows updates were unable to be successfully installed.
There are a few others that won't install either. KB839645, KB841873,
KB840374, KB870669 and whatever others haven't or won't install. I am not a
computer smart person and I'll be the first to admit that. I don't understand
why Microsoft puts out these updates and you can't install them. I have tried
over and over again and get the same thing. Also, I get the *LOGO TEST*
message whenever I try to update a program...like the Windows Media 10. I'm
confused on these and would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks for
your time. Have a great day and Holiday season!

Follow this:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Look for "When installing an update you receive the following message:
"Software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing""

Otherwise follow the Windows Update Checklist:

I forgot one thing too. I do NOT have the SP2 update. I have a Dell computer
and don't understand what all Dell says you have to go through to do the
updates...this one is only 11 months old. This getting on my last nerve

The Service Pack Installation Checklist can help with SP-2:

Delete Windows Update data:
Open My Computer
Double click C drive
Double click "Program Files" folder
Double click "Windows Update" folder.
Delete everything except the "V4" folder
Double click "V4" folder
Delete everything in the folder except "iuhist.xml"
Close the window and attempt update again.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ comes up as,
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Nothing in http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/updtcl.htm is of any help. Still
come up with this message,

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Microsoft Windows that helps you
get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use
Windows Update. If you are looking for updates to Microsoft products for
Macintosh operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/.

Apparently MS Support Professionals are ignoring the situation. Nobody has a
solution, best to ignore maybe they believe I will go away.

Stan;
Your problem is different so your solution is different.
Your is most likely related to multiple firewalls and/or a 3rd party
firewall.

Follow this:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Look for:
"When attempting to access the Windows Update Web site you receive the
following message: Thank You -- you must be running a Microsoft windows
operating system in order to use windows update"
And
"When using the Windows Update Web site you receive the following message:
Thank you ... Windows Update site no longer offers updates for your
computer"

Stan;
Do you have a hardware firewall, router etc?
If so temporarily bypass to see if problem now goes away.

And you did follow ALL the steps in the Windows Update Checklist?

Jupiter Jones [MVP]

No hardware firewall or router.

Followed all the steps in the Windows Update Checklist and many more. Tried
several other error codes posted solutions with no successes.
One good thing is that AU apparently is working. Checking Add\Remove
Programs in Control Panel shows entries dated 12/2004.

Thank you both for the information. Now I am thoroughly confused. I can NOT
update this Dell computer. Dell is suppose to be supportive...YEAH RIGHT!
Seems they know as much about it as I do...NOTHING. I would try all your
solutions but what if I mess up the computer and the way it runs???? Who is
going to fix that? Microsoft? Doubtful. Now I need to know the answers in my
terms. I told you I am NOT computer smart. Thanks again!
