Any body been able to keep vista intact through a mother board swap. Might
have to switch from amd based board to intel based board.
I have done xp in the past with some registry hacks that microsoft had
posted on their site once but they claimed they did not recommend. They
worked does anyone know if the same hacks could be applied to a vista
registry with drivers for new board moved over in correct directory.
Basically what I am asking can the hard drive controllers be reinitalized.

Yes it can be done. How successful you are depends. The main hurdle to
get over is getting Vista to boot the first time with the new MB
BEFORE you have a chance to install whatever particular new drivers
that came with the new mother board. One of those things you just have
to try and see what happens. Avoid anything fancy. Before proceeding
strip down you current configuration to bare minimum. Disable in BIOS
obvious problem things like RAID or SATA drives, then see if the old
system can still boot and run ok. Only then attempt to replace the MB.
Since you are switching from a AMD to Intel board yours might be more
difficult a transition due to chipset differences. Obviously you have
or will backup all your data files FIRST.

Only if it's the exact same mobo.

You have to go into device manager and remove all the on-boar
components from your old motherboard and system devices. Shutdown.
Swap the boards. Turn on and immediately install the chipset driver
for Vista. If you are using on-board RAID, backup first. Moving RAI
can be problem. Backup to an external drive

Worked for XP, but If I were the OP I'd definitely wait for a second
opinion.

Click the Start Orb and type msconfig in Start/Search and hit Enter. On the
Boot tab see if you have a checkbox for Nodetect. If so, check it, click
Apply and then OK. After the swap and Windows comes up run the driver
installations from the cd with the mobo then call up msconfig and uncheck
the box. Windows should then start detecting some additional devices and
installing drivers. The catch is that you may not have the checkbox. A
couple of my boxes don't.

Are you running an x86 or x64 version of Vista?

x64 Vista is pretty flexible. There is only the one ACPI x64 hal for all
hardware, regardless of Intel, AMD, or whatever. I don't use x86 Vista so I
can't comment on x86.

Don't even bother trying. You'll wind up with a horribly unstable system.
Swap hardware and either clean install or repair install.

Vista is a pain that way.
I have been able to get it to work a couple times by removing almost
everything from device manager, then shutting down and swapping.
But Vista is so finicky that doesn't work 75% of the time.
IF you manage to get it to work, you will have to reactivate as well.
I would do a complete backup of all data and be prepared to do a clean
install.

That's the problem. You don't. In Vista you do an in-place-upgrade. The
rub is that the OS has to be running to do it.
