Motif or X11Rx in Ultimate SUA?

Are either of these environments available for free or at reasonable
cost in SUA?

Hi Iain,

The SUA SDK includes X11R5 and X11R6 libraries and header files to build X
applications for SUA. However, there is no X server included in SUA itself,
to display them with.

A cheap and fully functional X server is Microimages M/IX:

Cost US$25. It works well with X applications running in SUA (I've used it
on several machines). This is a good starting point. M/IX doesn't do
anything fancy, but you will get your SUA X apps displayed on screen.

My personal favourite X Server for Windows is X-Win32, from Starnet:

This is somewhat more expensive (maybe US$150), which is still far cheaper
than Hummingbird. And X-Win32 is a very full-featured, robust X-Server.
Handles OpenGL and all kinds of stuff. I've had X apps running on SUA,
Solaris and Linux all displayed perfectly, side-by-side, on my Vista
desktop, using X-Win32.

If you want a "real" Motif library, you need to buy it - Motif is not
freeware, it needs to be licensed from the Open Group. There is a version of
"real" Motif for SUA available from Interop Systems:

The Interop Systems guys also have a wealth of other useful software, for
SUA.

I believe users have also managed to get Open Motif and LessTif to compile
under SUA as well ... probably info about that in the user forums, at the
Interop Systems site. I had a few compile errors building the default Open
Motif package in SUA, but I didn't try very hard to solve them. Probably not
too difficult, if you put your mind to it.

The version of Motif mentioned on the Interop website (2.2.2.x), looks
like it may have been derived from OpenMotif and not Motif. The last
real Motif release was Motif 2.1.30. OpenMotif forked at Motif 2.1.30
and evolve into what is now at 2.3 (see www.openmotif.org). The
changes made to OpenMotif are owned by parties other than
OpenGroup...

Maybe we just have similar version numberings? Anybody from Interop
listening that wants to clarify this? I have never looked at the
Interop product in detail, so I really cannot verify it's family tree.

I get easily confused about the licensing stuff. As I understand it,
OpenMotif *is* Motif, at the source code level, but distributed with a
different licence. I haven't used InteropSystem's binary product; but I
suspect you're right: it's OpenMotif, not Motif per se.

I only played with Motif coz I wanted to get Nedit running on SUA (or SFU,
as it then was). But, then a binary distribution of Nedit appeared in the
Tools warehouse, so I didn't need to build my own [Open]Motif.

I'm 99.99% sure Rodney and the guys do not lurk in this newsgroup. Best
place to get definitive clarification of the licence would be in the
