"partygrrl",
I am sorry that you are hitting this issue. This does not seem like a
Windows Update problem. Perhaps these other newsgroups would be more
helpful:
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
microsoft.public.windowsxp
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support
In the meantime, try using your keyboard to open your device manager folder
and roll back the driver.
To open device manager:
1. Type the <Windows Logo> key, or if you do not have that, the <CTRL> +
<Esc> keys. This should open your start window.
2. Use the arrow keys to move up and highlight "Run"
3. Press <Enter>
4. When this window opens, type: devmgmt.msc <Enter>
5. When this opens, use the tab key and arrow keys to move to your Mouse and
other pointing devices
6. Use the right arrow key and then down arrow keys to select your mouse.
7. Click the right-click key on your keyboard, located usually between the
right-side <Windows logo> key and the right-side <Ctrl> key.
8. Use the arrow keys to select Properties, then press <Enter>
9. Use the <Tab> key to highlight one of the tabs, then use the <right
arrow> key to select the Driver tab.
10. Use the Tab key to enter the driver tab, and move to highlight the "Roll
Back Driver" button. Press <Enter> to start rolling back the driver.
11. Reboot if requested.
12. If that fails, let us know how this worked out.
Sincerely,
Pat Walters [MSFT]
