Mouse stops

Hi I have a Dell windows XP ser. pack2 intalled. All of a sudden my mouse
just quits working. Sometimes I can't shut down my computer only to push the
button that I turn it off with. Is there another way to just restart the
computer when your mouse quits on you? I have read lots of the questions but
I did the F8 to start in safe mode but I couldn't get anywhere in there. I
think it must be something in the start up menu... But who am I to know I am
really knew at this game of computers it get very annoyed at myself for being
so dumb at this. This computer is about 3 years old. I have updated my
updates. I have done a disk scan and a disk def. but that didn't help the
mouse from stalling. I just can't get the mouse to work for anything. Please
help...

Tried another mouse? They do go bad. They also need to be cleaned now and
then.

As for turning the computer off, hold down CTRL and ALT, and press DEL. That
will bring up the Login Screen, and you can shut down from there by holding
down ALT and pressing S.
