yes, you can assign the letter C: to your Vista drive.
Note that you can't change the boot partition's drive letter in Vista.
So you have to boot into XP and do that there.

Go to Control Panel -> "Administrative Tools" -> "Computer Management" ->
"Disk Management".
Then, right-click the drive where you want to change the letter.
Click "Change drive letters and paths...".
(Hope it's similar in XP!)
