Move W2008 server onto different hardware ?

What's the best way to move a Windows 2008 server onto different hardware,
specifically a change of disk/RAID controller?

With 2003 server I've simply drop an image on the new box and if it couldn't
boot run a repair install from the CD

With 2008 this doesn't work as there's no repair install and the options to
fix the startup environment don't seem to cover installing a different HDD
controller driver.

How does everyone else do this?

Thanks

Hello Peter,

You can make a full server backup and restore it later on:

Thanks,

If I restore a backup onto hardware with a different RAID controller than
the original hardware will the restore process change the disk drivers so
that the restored system can boot up? The articles you provided links to
aren't very clear on that point.

Thanks

Hello Peter,

Different hardware is and was allways a problem with restoring a full backup.
A system state restore on a fresh install to the same OS version, SP level
and patch level should be better. And for data itself make sure you have
also actual backups.

Hello,

I need to move a server onto different hardware with a different RAID
controller, with W2003 this was easy just restore a complete backup and if
it couldn't boot because of a missing RAID driver for the boot device just
do a repair install off the CD to fix it.

It seems that this is quite an omission from W2008, in a DR situation it's
often necessary to restore onto different hardware.
