Movie Maker 2.6

How is a person supposed to find the cause for Movie Maker 2.6 abort? The crash sends stuff back to MS but offers not help.
I have un & re installed. Is it a .NET problem? OS problem?
Worked once just long enough to tell me that it is not capable of reading MM6 format. So why did MS suggest that I load MM 2.6?
Confused and frustrated by the lack of direction. Where can I look for help?
