Movie Maker Preview Hangup

My movie maker project file will load for editing, but the preview shows only
black and the Play btns and drop downs, while blue, do not seem to engage the
preview playback. It's like the MM is locked up. I can add clips, but
cannot manipulate them on timeline or storyboard. The clips already in the
project cannot be edited.

I'm running Vista on a Gateway laptop with MM version 6.0 (?).

Two other rough drafts of the same movie project run preview just fine.
